The Humble Sattoo - A Protein powerhouse

Sattoo (also called "Sattu") is often known as the poor man's protein. Sattoo is nothing but a fine powder of roasted chana. This humble ingredient is quite popular in northern states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

There are a number of varieties of sattoo available in the market today. It is being touted as the new superfood. If the varieties and brands available in the market are too confusing, then I recommend to simply stick to making sattoo at home. All you need to do is roast gram, let it cool and grind in a mixer to make a fine powder. Your home made sattoo is ready.

Sattoo can be consumed as both savory and sweet. I prefer the savory version.  Here's a quick recipe

  • Take one spoon of sattoo powder
  • mix the powder well in a chilled glass of water
  • Add little bit of pepper powder
  • Few drops of lemon juice
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 teaspoons of curd (optional)
  • Shake well
  • Garnish with coriander / mint leaves if you like.
  • Add couple of ice cubes if you prefer extra chill.

The humble sattoo drink is ready. If you are short of time, you can simply have sattoo mixed with salted water.

Benefits of Sattoo:

  • High overall nutritional value - Not just protein, it is rich in Calcium, Fiber, Iron and Magnesium as well.
  • Quick preparation
  • Easily digestible
  • Inexpensive
  • Perfect Summer drink - Sattoo keeps the body hydrated
  • Due to low glycemic index, it is safe for diabetics
Sattoo is an inexpensive option for people looking to meet their protein needs. I, personally, do not consume whey or any other protein supplements. These are relatively new products in the market and not really time tested. It is best to avoid newer supplements without a proper medical advice.

Pro Tip: No time to cook for breakfast? Just have a glass of Sattoo and you are done! Its a complete meal in itself
